Floral sexual phases can differ in nectar production and might be under selective pressure by pollinators. We studied Euphorbia tithymaloides, which has inflorescences that are initially female and then hermaphroditic. Volume and concentration of nectar were measured in both stages. Nectar production and the effect of extractions were determined using sets of bagged inflorescences; inflorescences in the hermaphroditic phase had higher values of nectar concentration, volume and sugar mass than inflorescences in the female phase. Nectar resorption was detected in senescent inflorescences. To test for homeostatic nectar regulation, artificial nectar was added and the response assessed after 24 h. The experiments showed that concentration and sugar mass are regulated within a narrow range, and the homeostatic points differ between the two sexual phases. These differences in nectar can be detected by hummingbirds, which prefer the female stage. Resorption and secretion seem to be part of a homeostatic mechanism by which nectar attributes are maintained to optimise sugar recovery. 相似文献

To reveal the influencing mechanism of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on mercury (Hg II) adsorption by black, red, and fluvo-aquic soils in China, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and three-dimensional excitation emission matrix (3DEEM) fluorescence spectroscopy were employed to characterize the DOM samples and DOM-Hg complexes. FTIR spectra showed that the complexation of Hg (II) mainly acted on the C=O, COO?, and O-H groups of DOM from swine manure (DOMs) and wheat straw (DOMw). The NMR spectra indicated that the complex reaction of Hg (II) and DOM corresponded with the change in carboxyl C. The NMR results also showed that the dominant C components in DOM were aromatic C, O-alkyl C, alkyl C, and carboxyl C, and that DOMw imposed more influence on Hg (II) adsorption than DOMs, which was consistent with that of FTIR spectroscopy. The 3DEEM showed that DOM contained both aromatic protein-like and fulvic-like substances, and that the protein-like properties of DOMs and UV fulvic-like fluorescence substances of DOMw can better participate in the formation of Hg complexes. This result provides strong direct evidence to elucidate the DOM-Hg (II) binding mechanism, and further interprets the effect mechanism of exogenous DOM on Hg adsorption by soil. 相似文献

We characterized the reactions between Tl (III) and the usual nitrone spin traps (DMPO, POBN, and PBN). The ESR signal obtained with DMPO corresponded to DMPOX which was avoided neither by the enzymes superoxide dismutase or catalase, nor by the hydroxyl radical scavengers’ mannitol, ethanol, or methanol. Only when methanol concentration rose to 90% (v/v), a significant decrease in DMPOX formation was observed while no detectable DMPOX signal was present at 100% methanol solution. POBN rendered an unexpected adduct, while no oxidation products were obtained with PBN. Together, the experimental evidence demonstrates that Tl(III)-supported DMPO oxidation is not mediated by oxygen reactive species. Instead, we propose that Tl(III) interacts with the probe, favoring the addition of water. The intermediate is susceptible to be further oxidized by Tl(III) yielding a keto group. Kinetic studies showed that Tl(III) disappearance rate was higher (1.6 times) than DMPOX formation rate, and equal to Tl(I) formation rate, suggesting a stoichiometry 1.5:1 for Tl(III):DMPOX and 1:1 for Tl(III):Tl(I). The process, an example of the Forrester-Hepburn’s mechanism, was demonstrated for DMPO while the reactions of Tl(III) with POBN and PBN are still under elucidation. 相似文献

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is one of the most fatal cancers in humans, with a gradually increasing incidence worldwide. The efficient diagnostic and therapeutic measures for CCA to reduce mortality are urgently needed. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) may provide the potential diagnostic and therapeutic option for suppressing the CCA development. LncRNAs are a type of non-protein-coding RNAs, which are larger than 200 nucleotides in length. Increasing evidence reveals that lncRNAs exhibit critical roles in the carcinogenesis and development of CCA. Deregulation of lncRNAs impacts the proliferation, migration, invasion, and antiapoptosis of CCA cells by multiple sophisticated mechanisms. Consequently, lncRNAs likely represent promising biomarkers or intervention targets of CCA. In this review, we summarize current studies regarding the biological functions and regulatory mechanisms of diverse lncRNAs in CCA. 相似文献
